I agree with you on the ex Birkenhead Mylleniums, the reason the grab rails are covered in tape is because the plastic coating has been peeled away for some reason or another (probably vandalism). As far as I know it's just the Mylleniums that have this coating opposed to paint like the rest of the fleet, its a stupid design if you ask me. Other than the rattles I think the Mylleniums are great, they have a nice, strong sounding engine and they are something different in the fleet. Just like the Ultralows they have something about them and sound like a proper bus unlike Pulsar, just my opinion.

It isn't due to vandalism, it's due the pole design (smooth) and having only that very thin layer of paint/coating that is unprotected, and thus flakes away with sweat, scraping past them etc... very easily.
There will be more evidence of vandalism towards the rear of the buses where they have been peeled away, but only due to them having patches where it has flaked away prior, encouraging people to peel it off

I'm not going to lie myself, I do like the mylleniums, some of them are great (I like 2463/5), they seem to be the last of the "proper" buses being high capacity, they 'chug' as they go along, they feel heavy, the seats are far from level, and they're the only type left at Speke with a ZF gearbox (excl. 2732/3).

I agree, the peeling of the grab poles is mainly just a wear & tear thing with maybe the rear ones getting peeled a little by idiots. I think the covering of them with yellow tape was quite a lazy thing to do really.

I'm a fan of the mylleniums too, Excluding a few (2471) Some are really nice!

As for them bring the only ZF at speke (bar 2732/3), I thought the Citaro's were ZF?

Indeed they are Elliott, you can add the two Prestiges to that list as well

RE: Arriva North West - Speke Depot - H101GEV - 14/10/2013 17:31

Some of the native Speke Myllenniums are OK, but the biggest problem I have with these buses is the seating. The padding added post-P&P makes something of a difference, but they're still very hard seats indeed for a route like the 81. Some of the ex-Birkenhead ones are fairly dire, with idle vibrations and crashy rides. There are certainly worse buses out there, but I for one won't miss these when they are replaced at Speke, and not before time.

RE: Arriva North West - Speke Depot - MPTE1955 - 14/10/2013 17:57

The seats are an issue as urban 90's are just horrible seats anyway, to be honest the ex-Birkenhead ones have been tightened up a bit during the summer when not all mylleniums would have been out on one day. Like anything else, not everybody will like these and not everybody won't.

The Pulsar 2 was on the 80A today, it seems!

It's a shame that arriva's other pulsars don't have proper windows like that one. It makes the bus look a lot better.

I agree in that bonded glazed windows improve appearance but gasket glazed windows are much easier (and cheaper!) to replace which makes the gasket windows more practical
