Dead mileage shouldn't be an issue as SLT still run the EL1 which is further from the depot than St Helens is.

My thought as far as Arriva is concerned is that the 395 should be extended from Ormskirk to St Helens. As well as having a Student market from St Helens/Rainford, it would also create a Student flow from Wigan/Upholland/Skelmersdale, so any money lost on the quiet Rainford - Edge Hill section would be regained from these new flows. Thus the 352 would no longer interwork.
