Yes... to do a variation costs £60, then another £60 to change it back. The new registration is for an additional journey which is only running for 3 weeks and the total registration fees are £60 (and it's one form less to fill in).

And a paperwork-saving exercise - the job is complicated enough so every form saved is a bonus.

Also note that Stagecoach Manchester do this fairly regularly with service 216 when there are events taking place at Eastlands.

Normally with Christmas changes they can go on form PSV001 which does not appear in N&P, but this only covers the weeks which include Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day - this modification of the 126 is for most of December so needed to be done separately.
