RE: Merseyrail
Due to a major signalling fault there is presently no service between Birkenhead Central / Birkenhead North and Liverpool

Timetable changes on the Northern line from Monday (26th October).

Kirkby, Ormskirk and Hunts Cross lines reverting back to 30 mins all day.
Hunts Cross to Ormskirk straight through running.
Southport to Liverpool Central remain every 15 mins.

Seems according to RTT, an additional service will run between Maghull and Sandhills around 15:45, assume for the school children returning from school. Quite a unique move-departure from Platform 2 at Maghull using the cross over just after the level crossing.

I do wonder how many trains this new timetable will require over the present timetable.

Is this to build in a contingency for staff sickness .

The Wirral Line never actually had a major increase in train frequencies unlike the Northern Line and will stay with the present timetable.

Kirkdale is down to the bare bones staff wise and was struggling badly to staff the full timetable. With the onset of winter plus potential self isolating things aren't expected to improve for a while.

How much of the Southport service is provided by the train crew depots at Kirkdale and Southport.

Hmmm good question that!
Southport and kirkdale do both cover all Northern line routes but id say kirkbys/ormskirks are 80% covered by kirkdale and southports 70% by Southport depot.
Don't take those percentages as official though!!

I make it 48 units required for this new timetable which seems to be the diagram limit following the demise of 508110/134.

A de facto leaf fall timetable has been put into place on the Northern Line with slack timings, so 10 are required on the Ormskirk - Hunts Cross service (5 x six cars) and 8 on the off-peak Southport line (with 6 extra units to make the usual 6 x six car sets which seem still to be booked according to Real Time Trains). The Kirkby line requires 4 units (2 x 6 car sets).

The Wirral Line is unchanged at 20 units required, although this is with 6 cars on the Ellesmere Port line instead of Chester. It would be 49 required if the issues are solved and Chester goes back to 6 car operation, but I can't see this coming back without cuts elsewhere. They may consider reducing the New Brighton line to 3 cars as it simply doesn't justify 6 cars at present, even in peak times.

RE: Merseyrail
The six car Chester service wont be coming back any time soon , as there electrical problems occuring in the Chester area when ever two six car units take power beyond Capenhurst at the same time , not so much of a problem when operating as three cars.

49 if you include the Maghull school train

Don't expect the Maghull school train to run. It was actually in the Wtt timetable during the previous 30min service on the Ormskirk line but didn't run once due to no unit being available. It won't be publicised.
