St Helens Bus Network Review
With thanks to Buses7675 for showing me this it seems that Merseytravel are looking to make some savings in St Helens by merging some of the contracts into Commercial Services that already operate in the area, It could see HTL lose a hell of a lot in that area:

The 36 and 156 could be for merging. It would be able to serve Pocket Nook Street, Standish Street and possibly withdraw the A10. I can't see HTL losing many contracts here.

Looking at the bigger picture this is going to happen over the whole of merseyside eventually by looking to the big companies to help them out and if it does then the likes of HTL and CUMFYBUS will lose a lot of work unless they are prepared to run some of the routes commercial themselves.

Why would the 36 and 156 Merge.. If anything Arriva will take them on a Diminished contracts, just like whats happened in Kirkby.

Is diminished contract the same as deminimus payments for covering a selective part of the route where there is no hope of it being operated commercially otherwise.

Yeah, same thing really, referred to as DM in the contract numbers, often where a commercial route is diverted/extended to cover a certain road/area with funding from Merseytravel.

I'm thinking it would go to Pocket Nook, College St, and then continue the normal journey to Chain Ln. Then to Blackbrook Rd and onward to Wagon Ln, Garswood and Ashton. Vice versa to St Helens. Given Chain Ln shops are so close to Blackbrook Rd why wouldn't it work?

Most of my stuff is often a load of rubbish but this is one thing I think Merseytravel should look at, I genuinely think this would work.

I use a bus which covers part of a previous MT contract which they took over. So why dont i get a reduced fare? Do Arriva get my full fare and the MT money? The route is commercial except for the section where i get on and off.

One thing you have to consider is only the Eve/Sunday is tendered so would only affect them trips so there is no advantage in doing that, Here Merseytravel are looking to save money so getting operators to run Services on a Diminished Contract hits the aim of saving money and assuming this happens it would be Arriva running and and would make the St Helens network better.

The contract will have been based on the operator using commercial fares and so reducing the subsidy Merseytravel pay the operator for that part of the route and so making it cheaper for Merseytravel.
