While car parking charges at stations like Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Knutsford have existed for a long time, Northern are introducing car parking charges at some of the stations in Cheshire which used to have free parking such as Northwich. Apparently this is to fund improvements.

The way it's looking is Cheshire passengers who drive to the station will have to pay between £3 and £12 to park there, while Greater Manchester passengers can park for free. This is despite stations in Greater Manchester usually having better onward public transport. I can see the roads getting busier around the likes of Altrincham, Heald Green, Hazel Grove, Cheadle Hulme etc. and local people in those areas finding their local station car park full as people from Cheshire drive to Greater Manchester stations more.
