Rather by accident than by design, we essentially now have two operators on the Wirral with Arriva and Stagecoach which means we have almost come full circle since 1986 when the MPTE and Crosville were the incumbents. Was it worth the decades of upheaval?

Yes you are right. Interestingly, Stagecoach have benefitted a number times by squeezing out opposition or taking over failed operators. Target travel in Plymouth, Wessex in Bristol, GHA and Avon in Cheshire and Wirral, First in Barnstaple, Northampton, Plymouth, Cheshire and Wirral and consolidated in Sheffield. North East Lancashire and Darlington are the major retreats. There has always been an improvement in rolling stock however if is fair to say.

Some of the changes are very interesting, route 16/17 to extend to Raby mere replacing the 84, route 38 extending to EastHam ferry replacing the 85, route 22 to serve Sandbrook replacing the 18, the 82 being extended to Greasby probably reaplacing the 88 and looks like the 91 will follow some of the old 90 route in oxton.
I wonder if A2B will run the 73

Merseytravel routes 107/207/208, 124/125, 821 and C5 will definitely not be getting replaced, however Arriva are currently considering their commercial provision of evening and Sunday routes 492/495
I wonder if Arriva are thinking about doing a 408/409/492/495 circuit like the 124/5, i noticed on Twitter Arriva are reviewing the 408/409

That is so annoying, Merseytravel should be looking to replace the operator for these services especially as there's a reason why these services operated in the first place.

107/207/208 the alternative services 38/407 don't start until after 7am towards Birkenhead, when these routes operated before 7am

RE: Merseytravel Timetable Changes - T42 PVM - 28/10/2018 09:23

I think the extra cost of getting Stagecoach in has played a part on the limited services getting reinstated

Its a double edged sword , if Stagecoach hadnt stepped into the breach , how much more of those services wouldn't have be operated as well. You can tell by the time its taken to get them services running how much behind the scenes talking has taken place .

Annoying - yes, but the reality of the situation is that most if not all of Avon's routes were at best marginal. Merseytravel just won't have the money to stump up the cost of "like for like" replacements, hence the compromise position that has been arrived at.

Depends on the quantity and quality of service and cost of fares now, compared to 32 years ago. Other than ticket availability, the "colour" of the buses is largely irrelevant.

I agree that the quality of services in 1986 was much better than it is now but a weekly £14 now would only cost £5.80 then. The rationale given then was that a privatised bus service would improve things and make it better for bus users.
