First must still expect the services they do then on Boxing Day to bring in a lot of money , otherwise it would be uneconomical to do.

After tax that will be about £18.

The services will be subsidised which will offset the wage bill. In Southport tomorrow and no doubt the rest of Arriva in Merseyside drivers will be on double time c.£22/hour.

It is Boxing Day after all and if people are going to sacrifice time off to work when 90 odd% of the country is shut down then they deserve to be appropriately rewarded in their pay packets. Pre-dereg there were no buses on the road at all but in this age off a total and utter commercialised world where conglomerates rule not governments this festive season has passed and the sales now need peddling and bus companies are only reacting to the market albeit with help from the PTA or county council.

Bah Humbug!

B10B6514, what year were you born? Prior to Deregulation in 1986 all bus services in Merseyside (and throughout the country as far as I recall) were operated by the local PTE or local authority. In fact bus services then ran 365 days a year, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, albeit on a Sunday service with an early (10pm) finish. What you might recall, or not, was that in the those days if Boxing Day and New Year's Day fell on a Sunday, a Sunday service was still provided even though all shops were closed. (Shops and stores were not allowed to open on a Sunday until 1994). I can remember getting a bus into Liverpool on many a Boxing and New Year's Day in the 60's and 70's and walking around a desolate city centre when all shops, pubs and restaurants were closed. Back then I questioned the need for a comprehensive bus service when essentially there was absolutely no reason or need to travel into the city centre. However, today Liverpool, like many major cities in the UK is a vibrant, bustling, cosmopolitan city that needs and deserves a bus service 365 days a year.

Also, prior to deregulation, what you may not be aware of is that on Boxing Day and New Year's Day as well as Sunday service, a full football special service to either Anfield or Goodison Park using as many as 80 buses was provided by the LCPT/MPTE. How do I know all this? My father worked these services.

What really does perplex me these days is why London doesn't run any services on Christmas Day.

Barney, Thanks for your comments. I can remember the late 70s and 80s here in Southport and the system was on a shutdown. The first Boxing Day and New Years Day services I remember was 1986 when Southport depot was shut but Merseytravel provided a subsidised network operated by the likes of Formby Coaches and Merseybus Walton depot.
With being a town needs were different to a city- fast forward to 2013 and Boxing Day was busy all round in the town centre and on the buses.

I know one of the drivers who operated the Southport services that Christmas in 1986. He told me at the time that he brought a minibus from Walton to Southport and was paid handsomely for his day's work. The newly privatised Merseybus billed the MPTE £97 for his shift whilst he collected the princely sum of £2.65 in cash fares. In those days, with the exception on pensioner's passes, there were no pre-paid tickets and so that reflected the demand at that time. Fast forward 27 years and the demand and need is very different bearing in mind that the Merseyrail system is shut down. Coincidentally, the driver in question has recently achieved a well-earned retirement after 47 years on the buses in Merseyside.

It will be interesting to see what Christmas and New Year's services are registered in 2014.

Apologies to all for going off topic.
