County Council Elections - wirralbus - 03/05/2013 20:19

The one thing that shines out in these results is that the Coalition parties did bad but not devastating bad .

Labour Party managed to just about get back to the position they was in 4 years ago when these County Council and Unitary Authorities where last fought for . There is according to some people in politics a feeling that we will vote for Labour but with Ed Milliband in power .

Conservative Party Grandees must be thinking what have we done to deserve UKIP turning up , remember it was the Eurosceptics in the Conservative that eventually killed off John Major's Government in 1997 and what did we get 13 yrs of Blair / Brown , will this be the same ?

Liberal Democrats now these must be thinking things can only get better , coming 7th in South Shields parlimentary By-Election has to be very painful , of the two coalition parties they seem to have come out of this quite badly , maybe because they have backtracked on so many of there policies to come in line with the Conservative line .

UKIP now where do we go from here , Eastleigh and South Shields have proved that sooner rather than later they will get a big scalp . UKIP seemed to take seats off all parties but most of them did come from dis-satsified Conservative Voters , they now have four years in those council seats to consolidate themselves into a 4th electable party not a fringe one issue party.

I suspect when some of the voters who decided to give Cameron and Gideon a gentle kicking yesterday, actually read some of the UKIP policies other than their Europhobic rants that grab the headlines, they will sit at home at the next general election rather than vote UKIP again.

Good to see the BNP/EDL creatures getting another thorough kicking which will hopefully see them shrivel up and slither back under the stone they came from.

The BNP's seats came about because of a very dissatisified part of the electorate who thought that nobody was listening to them and so decided to give all the mainstream parties a big fright .

Its Middle England that will decide the fate of the Country in May 2015 , not long now .

Isn't that what UKIP appeal is as well?

Labour must be overjoyed - the better UKIP do, the harder it will be for Cameron to cling on.

But opinion polls have been showing , Labour has to try and make Ed Milliband prime Ministerial Material or go looking for a replacement as he is a liability to them at the moment .

Bookies seem fairly confident though that Camerson is toast.

Lets just revisit this conversation in 2014 at the moment i agree the coalition is cream crackered .

On 'Have I Got News for You' last night, Ian Hislop mentioned the Tories laughing at UKIP and calling them 'clowns' according to Kenneth Clown - sorry Clarke! Paul Merton jumped in and said ' Good job it wasn't Jeremy Hunt!'

A majority of County Councils are still Conservative-controlled. While the creation of some Unitary authorites will have heled, by removing some Labour areas, these results seem a more modest loss for the Conservatives than the equivalent "bloody nose" County elections in 1993.

This UKIP voter won't be doing that, and neither will any of the fellow voters he has spoken to recently (and there have been several). Some of us have had it up to here with all three of the so-called mainstream parties. It's far more than just a protest vote. UKIP garnered nearly 25% of the popular vote - very significant indeed and has certainly brought the party into contention as a major political player.

However, as Metroline says, the Conservative's losses are hardly as disastrous as might be expected. Labour have made gains, but it doesn't say a lot for Miliband that these gains are well below what you might expect given the unpopularity of the coalition.

I can't disagree on the BNP sentiments at all but I think they were a genuine protest vote. Griffin's credibility since their success has been thankfully shot to ribbons.
