(20/06/2019 07:01)M60lad Wrote:  The Norht side of Manchester grinded to a virtual halt last night due to the full closure of Stevenson Square from 17:00-22:00 for an event for Clean Air week, unfortunatly this created chaos in the surrounding area with reports of buses running from 60 to even 90mins late. It was actually taking 60mins just to get from Shudehill to Oldham Street, it didn't help as apparently a bus broke down at Oldham Street/Great Ancoats Street junction.

I finished work at 18:00 and it was utter gridlock on Church Street/Dale Street and beyond with buses still attempting to get to their terminus points, I got talking to one driver from Oldham Depot who was on an 81 who by the time they left Manchester should have been on their mealbreak and supposed to take off a 409 after their break but couldn't due to the problems in Manchester so despite the problems being in Manchester a 409 would have been missing last night along with one of the last First 81s to Oldham as the bus they were on should have been 20:05 81 from Piccadilly-Oldham only but the bus didn't get to Oldham until 19:50ish on its way to Derker.

And, of course, the pollution caused by the congestion was a great contribution to Clean Air Week. Is there ANYBODY with active brain cells involved in planning these events ?

It was utter chaos and I was one of the drivers badly effected. Ended up running my 217 90 minutes late!
Ironically it was supposed to be an 'official protest' to drum up publicity for the permanent pedestrianisation of Stevie square but all it actually did was alienate more commuters against the whole idea. If they had actually monitored air quality yesterday in that area they would have found it was well up on what it normally is.
I'm pretty sure TFGM are involved in this clean air campaign??

BOLTON SOLD TO ROTALA

https://www.firstgroup.com/greater-manchester/news-and-service-updates/news/first-manchester-announces-intention-sell-bolton

Quote:First Bus has today announced its intention to sell the Bolton bus depot and operations to Rotala PLC.

The intended sale would include the Bolton depot site, with 18 bus services transferring across to Rotala. The sale is expected to complete in the next few months and more than 500 employees who work for the Bolton bus operation will transfer to Rotala.

First Manchester will continue to operate existing local bus services from the Bolton site until the sale is completed and customers should see no changes to their daily journeys throughout this period of transition. Going forward, First Manchester will focus its attention on the remaining bus services that primarily operate from the Oldham bus depot. Vantage services will also continue to be operated by First Manchester.

Following a review of its Manchester operations completed last year, First Bus took the decision to reduce exposure in Greater Manchester due to the current uncertainties in that particular market. Today’s news also follows the recent sale of First Manchester’s Queens Road depot.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Giles Fearnley, Managing Director of First Bus, said: “I’d like to thank our employees for their continued hard work to deliver the best experience possible for our customers in Greater Manchester. Today’s announcement does not reflect on the effort, commitment or individual performance of our Bolton employees and we will be supporting them fully as they transfer to their new employer.”

Rotala statement to the Stock Exchange

Quote:Transaction highlights:

· Acquisition of Bolton depot and associated business, capable of operating up to 200 vehicles and serving 18 commercial bus routes

· Acquisition will make Rotala the second largest player in the Manchester bus market, one of the largest bus markets in the country

· Bolton depot will become the headquarters of the Rotala Group in the North West

· Rotala to lease 125 vehicles from First initially to service the new routes, with vehicles being replaced progressively by the Group in the next two years, leading to lower maintenance costs and fuel efficiencies

· Acquisition to be financed in cash from existing debt facilities

· Capital expenditure on bus replacement and re-equipment can be financed using the Group's existing panel of providers of hire purchase finance facilities

· Acquisition expected to be earnings enhancing in the first full year following completion and will significantly increase the scale of the business

· Completion of the Acquisition is expected to occur in August 2019 following receipt of necessary regulatory permissions

John Gunn, Chairman of Rotala, commented:

"This acquisition represents an exciting opportunity to expand significantly Rotala's presence in the Greater Manchester bus market. The deal is an indicator of how the UK bus landscape is beginning to change. We can expect more divestment by the big bus groups in future years. Rotala aims to be a major player in these market developments in years to come."

And then there was Oldham....

RE: First Manchester - Gillmoss 0324 - 27/06/2019 07:55

It will be interesting whether the Competition Commission gets involved as the existing Diamond Bus operation in Bolton/surrounding area's is fairly significant. Arriva, Stagecoach and Rosso seem a bit minor players as competitors in Bolton so maybe a bit of trading might have to happen before it all falls into place.

I assume if this is all clear Rotala will merge this into the Diamond Bus brand, could be the start of an interesting move for Rotala in the North West too.

Yep Oldham's last man standing for First and if First want to keep it and more importantly survive it might be transferred to/run by the West Yorkshire division although I reckon it will get sold off at some point although a long drawn out sale does no good to both staff and passengers in the end.

Does anyone have a list of the services Bolton Depot operates
Thanks

RE: First Manchester - Solo40336 - 27/06/2019 08:27

Having had an insight into how Bolton and Rotala run. Rotala really need to change the way the run if Bolton's going to survive

RE: First Manchester - Mrboo - 27/06/2019 08:46

And Oldham may take the tender routes from Bolton as they also not part of deal. unless they have a plan to have a base. unless they reopen Rusholme if not been Sold

RE: First Manchester - St Helens Rider - 27/06/2019 08:48

Have read on another forum that there is rumours of First reopening Rusholme to cover Vantage routes whish sounds plausible as there would be a lot of dead mileage if run from Oldham.

Rusholme should of had Vantages in my view as it right next to MRI same as 18 and 53
