I think 507002 was in position for ecs to somewhere. It was sat outside birkenhead depot looking very sorry for itself....

West Kirby 6 car this evening is 507006/507007 . I havnt seen these 2 paired together in recent memory

Ex Bombardier director will oversee the Merseyrail fleet renewal.

Not surprised it is someone ex Bombardier really. I still think the Aventra will be chosen.

RE: Merseyrail - 507 mad - 10/10/2012 17:53

i thought 508123 was very poor today, it was making a chugging noise like a steam loco (not the clinking sound the axles make) on the approach to hightown, the engine sound terrible and the PA speakers were making that gggrrr noise like 507017 often makes, and it's carriges were very squeaky ( very common with the 507/8's ).

RE: Merseyrail - H101GEV - 10/10/2012 18:35

I definitely remember that pairing, probably about 5 years ago on the Southport line one Saturday. I'll check my notes at some point to confirm the date. I've seen virtually all the possible '00' combinations over the years, I admit rather embarrassingly.

Doors don't really come into my idea of what constitutes a good or bad set, but it's interesting to see how different people view the various possibilities. Generally, if a set is sluggish, jerking, squeaking and poorly presented, it's not going to give a good impression. I'll have a look out for 130 though as it's a set I haven't ridden for months. I can relate to 123 though, a very poor unit. The noise you describe was probably a wheelflat; like defective doors, these are plaguing the fleet just now. 508103 is another which has bad flats.

RE: Merseyrail - jtd508110 - 10/10/2012 18:38

Haha! I know a few sets have been together reguarly like 507001/508130. 507001/507002 etc...

I think the doors are important, particuarly on a long route as the dwell time that them closing slower creates is bad. Sets with doors that hiss really loud when the train is moving. Example of that was 508103 the other day. 508104 sounded dreadful this evening on the Ellesmere Port Line!

RE: Merseyrail - First Class - 10/10/2012 19:19

Should had made the doors passenger operated, thereby reducing wear on the runners by pointlessly opening every single door. If the new trains are ever climate controlled, which is quite likely, they will have to implement passenger operated doors to maintain the atmosphere efficiently.

RE: Merseyrail - H101GEV - 10/10/2012 21:11

I think passenger door controls should have been part of the refurbishment, along with internal bins. That would have reduced both littering and draughts internally, two little niggles which the 507/8s at times suffer from.

Another couple of common pairings have been 507003 + 507005 and 507012 + 507013.

Following the recent problem with flooding in the Capenhurst and hooton area , which seem to have been going on for some years now , what effect is removing the signal box at Hooton in favour of extending the sphere of Chester PSB to include Hooton.

One good idea of having a man on the ground at Hooton effectively is to be able to monitor any potential problem before it escalates whereas a man in a PSB will only realise there is a problem after the event .

They'll just do as present, send the Chester area MOM or AOM out.

Hooton signallers are not allowed on the track, due to no PTS.

The trackbed needs looking at though, from an engineering perspective. Improved drainage etc.
