One of the reasons for the additional short 34s (which are operated by Hyde Road) is to offer passengers from Worsley a slightly quicker and frequent service into Manchester than what 33 is doing at the moment due to the continuing roadworks on Regent Road which is adding journey times to most 33s at the moment.
The main 34s from Leigh-Manchester are still operated by Bryn Depot though.

I think as well its not just the opportunities the road works on Regent Road have thrown up, The 33 was being cut back by FirstGroup, and had been at least once before if not twice. Also the 34 route via Worsley itself and the A580 was carrying very little in the way of passenger's. Also on another front people from Astley and Boothstown had complained that they couldn't get to Hospital appointments for several years, by bus, as Hope is the main Hospital for them, so it made logical sense to re-route it. I suspect that the timing just needed to be right or it would have happened before.
The Hyde Road journeys as you say are extra buses to cater for demand between Manchester and Worsley Court House as journey's beyond Worsley Court House have less levels of ridership, so don't merit them being extended onward to Leigh, however the RHS Garden being built just past that stage at Boothstown might Merit an extension of that in the future.

What will probably happen is a cascade effect where Hybrid's will move to 38's etc, then that will free up 09 plate examples for Oxford Road. Really there is no longer a need for MagicBus as all the competition off Oxford Road has been defeated over the past 20 years or so, bar a little bit of Go North West and Vantage that's hardly worth them getting upset about.
Why are they getting rid of stagecoach gold???
Seems an odd thing to do as on longer distance routes surely people would appreciate a bit of extra comfort as opposed to a standard bus. Magic bus I can see why it's going as they haven't really got much competition as you mentioned.

They can still have that. For example, the 67-reg Scanias that are used on the X2 have high-spec interiors, despite being in proper Stagecoach livery. It's the separate livery and name that are unnecessary.

Gold has been a temporary thing to draw attention to upgraded buses which are now standard and it has worked.
