Well it is speculation at this stage, but apparently the guard was examining the line for some reason, or certainly was on the track with his unit stopped, and another Northern unit wiped the poor sod out.
It is possible any number of things has happened, i.e. train behind has had a SPAD, the signalman hasn't cancelled a route/set the correct route or any number of things could have happened.
I would not like to speculate any further though, as obviously a member of staff has died today, and he was a member of the Northern Railways forums, so showed a keen interest in his job.
All respects and thoughts are with those who knew him. I hope the full circumstances can be identified to hopefully enable closure in the future.

That is a nice mark of respect from the northern railways forum guys to suspend there forum till midnight tonight as a mark of respect.
I know that a death in service is hard to take at the best of times when someone is suddenly taken from you .
I wish to pass my condolences on to all his family and friends as im not a member of that particular forum.

Please could I ask that people don't speculate on the cause until we have the results of any enquiry.
The person involved was a good friend of mine, suffice to say, feelings are running quite high at the moment.

Arent 156's the same length as 155's so they should have clearence problems with them both being 23m length against the 142 and 150 being 20 m

Fair point, but unlikely as they are not signed by Lime St, Wigan or Blackpool Crews and don't work West of Manchester Victoria.
They have worked through Wallgate in the past, when new they were stored at Steamport in Southport pending modifications, but they will have been empty so no problem as the issue isn't length, it's width with them having plug doors.
142's are only 15.55 metres long (per vehicle).
