Buses of the Past : Waterloo Interchange

    Author: dvfmliv
Subject: Waterloo Interchange
Posted: 07/09/2010 at 22:58

I grew up in Crosby, and grew up with the Waterloo Interchange.

The plan was quite simple. To withdraw what MPTE saw as an over-supply of buses in the Crosby area by timing existing (and some new) services to meet with the trains for Liverpool at a purpose-built roundabout adjacent to Waterloo railway station.

It may have helped MPTE on a financial basis as an exercise in cost-cutting, this was 1977, but for the ordinary traveller it was a logistical nightmare, particularly if you lived in the east of Crosby, Waterloo and Thornton in general.

Whereas, in the past, buses had travelled direct between these suburbs towards Bootle and the city centre, now they did a diversion from the main A565, up South Road, around the bus terminus, and back down South Road, onto the main drag to continue their respective journeys. Even when it was quiet, this diversion put another 5 minutes on a journey. During peak hours, the horrendous traffic around the Interchange could easily add 15 minutes to a working.

Oddly, if you used the L3 for example, your journey was unchanged because this service passed Waterloo station already.

At deregulation, the Interchange was abandoned by both North Western and Merseybus, and buses ran directly between Crosby and the city centre again. Old habits died hard though. I was on a 351 Ormskirk bus on the first day of the new regime, and the driver STILL turned up South Road - almost unthinking.

The Waterloo Interchange is important in local transport history because it showed MPTE at work - probably THE example of the bus-to-rail policy they tried to shape. The Kirkby station interchange was much the same.

Buses still used the Interchange as a terminus, notably the 103 Waterloo-Aigburth Vale peak-time route (a de-reg extension of the old dock route 1) and tendered services 133 and 151. The land is still owned by Merseytravel, but probably sees more action nowadays as an unofficial taxi rank than anything else.

I think it may have stopped Seaforth and Litherland station (following the L3 and 284 to Waterloo), but might have taken the Princess Way by-pass (as the current X2), can't remember?

Edited by dvfmliv - Yesterday at 22:39
